Back to Posting!

Took some time off from updating the site but not from writing. I thought I’d share a few of my legacy.com pieces here. I have so much fun doing them, exploring people’s lives.

The story from my October offerings that most struck home was about the language of obituaries. Specifically, how should we handle deaths by overdose and suicide? I interviewed some amazing parents who suffered the loss of their children and were working hard to make sure others didn’t know that pain. You can read that story here.

My favorite November offering was about Harvey Milk. For those who don’t know, Milk was one of the first openly gay politicians. He was assassinated in 1978, but the foundation that bears his name is still promoting his message.

Another November story featured Bill Bixby and the incredible grace the “Incredible Hulk” actor displayed handling personal setbacks and illnesses.

December was a full month, too. I think writing about Brandon Teena meant the most to me. Teena’s story was the inspiration for the movie “Boys Don’t Cry.” I also really enjoyed learning how Jack Klugman changed lives by advocating for so-called “orphan drugs” on his show, “Quincy,” and in Washington.

This month, I wrote about Tug McGraw, a hero here in Philadelphia. I also took on a piece about Richardo Montalban. I thought I’d be writing about Mr. Roarke and “Fantasy Island.” Then I talked to Montalban’s son-in-law and did some research and learned so much more.

(Side note: I was late for meeting a friend for drinks because of the interview. When we met up, I explained my lateness by saying, “Sorry. I was on the phone with Ricardo Montalban’s son-in-law.” She said, “You have an interesting job.”)

Many more to come!
